Contzen family papers, 1878-1954 (bulk 1901-1954).

Business correspondence, legal documents and material related to mining and real estate in the Tucson area. There are also personal and family papers, photographs and field notes, survey sketches, maps and drawings. The bulk of the collection is Philip's memo books containing technical notes from survey work. Photographs show a fire at Steinfeld's Grocery in the 1920s, family members, Tumacacori, Mount Lemmon, Canada del Oro, Madera Canyon, White House Canyon, and other places in the Tucson area. Maps and drawings are of Gold Channel Placer Claims, the Canada del Oro Water Storage and Power Reservoir, Laguna Estates, Del Oro Placer Land Development Company, and Canada del Oro Canal.

Surveyors; Fritz Contzen accompanied Emory's Boundary Survey group to Arizona in 1854. His son Philip, also a surveyor, worked for the U.S. General Land Office, and as City Engineer and Pima County Surveyor. Philip's son, Frederick, was a surveyor for the U.S. Geological Survey, Soil Conservation Service and the National Parks Service.
